We are now about halfway through National Library Week. The theme this year is "Come Together @ Your Library". Many libraries are running special programs to celebrate and highlight the variety of ways they serve patrons. I had the privilege of hosting an Open Mic event for the Downey City Library. The Open Mic was for teens, and it was a great success! Some came to perform, some to listen. The subject matter covered by the original poetry ranged from music and creativity, to joyous love, to angst, abuse, and loss. Most performers seemed at ease, even comfortable reading in front of the group. A few were nervous, but they were still brave enough to make it thorough their poem.
There are still a few programs left in National Library Week, and can be viewed on the DCL website until Saturday. http://www.downeylibrary.org/
