Incarceron by Catherine Fisher

This is the first of a two part series. Book 1: Incarceron, Book 2: Sapphique. Both were great stories! A little bit of fantasy, a little history, a little adventure. It seems like a couple of parts were predictable, but that was OK since you were rooting for a good outcome. I don't want to tell you too much about the book, so I'm just going to give you the publisher's summary:
Incarceron is a prison so vast that it contains not only cells, but also metal forests, dilapidated cities, and vast wilderness. Finn, a 17-year-old prisoner, has no memory of his childhood and is sure that he came from Outside Incarceron. And then Finn finds a crystal key that allows him to communicate with a girl who claims to live on the Outside
